OVERALL SUMMARY

The HBO Technology team is the group responsible for delivering HBO’s award winning content to our subscribers 24/7; our work enables Game of Thrones, Westworld, and Hollywood’s best movies to be consumed anywhere and everywhere. Within the Technology organization, the Media Technology Project Management team (MTPM), as a part of the Media Technology & Information Services (MTIS) division, is responsible for full stack project management support of programs and projects along HBO’s media supply chain. That includes end-to-end strategic project management for initiatives that span across HBO’s technology organization, as well as tactical embedded project management for HBO’s Media Software Engineering and Media Hardware Engineering. The team is an integral part of HBO’s innovative Technology department which is building the next generation of HBO’s global media supply chain.

The Director of Strategic Project Management will be responsible for leading concurrent strategic programs focused on evolving HBO’s SVOD and Electronic Sell-Thru (EST) processing and distribution workflows to be more efficient, flexible, and ready for the next new distribution point. This person will report to the VP of Media Technology Project Management and will oversee a team of two seasoned Project Managers. The position is based in HBO’s New York City offices.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director will work closely with peers in Media Operations, Engineering and HBO’s Business teams to ensure all project requirements are captured and next gen workflows are built to fulfill HBO’s expanding global distribution platforms.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead complex, cross departmental technology initiatives with 20+ working team members focusing on streamlining HBO’s SVOD and EST processing and distribution workflows while making them more responsive to partners’ needs.

  • Set technical project management standards and objectives and develop project management methods in order to achieve them.

  • Ensure project artifacts are created, maintained and shared across the project team (e.g. project plans, workflows, timelines, meeting agendas, summaries, etc.)

  • Work with technology and business stakeholders to prioritize the department’s activities.

  • Partner with engineering teams to tease out implementation details, identify roadblocks before they occur and redefine strategy for successful, timely implementation.

  • Serve as liaison between technical and non-technical stakeholders both within and outside the company in order to drive and improve cross-functional processes and programs.

  • Be the focal point of communication within the Technology organization on the programs and projects that you and your team own.

  • Interact with senior management to keep them informed of departmental initiatives.

REQUIREMENTS

HBO is looking for a highly skilled individual who has a proven track record of leading multi-departmental technology programs to successful completion in a dynamic, rapidly evolving media tech environment.

Technical Requirements:

  • Experience in Technical Program or Project Management including hands-on management of large cross-functional software efforts.

  • Knowledge of digital media processing and distribution supply chains, particularly metadata and media transformation.

  • Ability to visualize, capture, and describe media systems and workflows.

  • Understanding of the TVE, OTT, and EST digital media landscapes (prior work experience in these fields is a plus).

  • Proven experience balancing the requirements and deadlines set from Operations stakeholders with the prioritized backlog of the Engineering teams.

  • Cultivate business relationships internally and externally and help maintain department as “go to” resource for information and expertise.

Additional requirements and competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or other related technical discipline is preferred.

  • Minimum 7 years of experience working as a project or program manager and/or managing a team of project or program managers.

  • Experience leading a team is a plus.

  • Ability to accomplish goals by managing individuals both through traditional reporting structure and through dotted line relationships across multiple departments to meet deadlines.

  • Very strong presentation, communication (oral and written), interpersonal, and organizational skills a must.

  • Excellent analytical and research skills.

  • Skilled in quickly connecting with and influencing people.

  • Adept in a fast-paced environment while prioritizing and managing several projects at once.
