The Director of Production Research and Development is responsible for the technical development and strategic guidance of digital media production from digital acquisition through digital presentation and exhibition, with particular focus on next generation techniques and workflows. This position communicates and collaborates with client and operational departments, is an advocate for HBO in vendor relationships, represents HBO’s present and future interests in standards bodies, and mentors other members of the Digital Production Services team.
This position requires strong organizational and communication skills, a solid understanding of software development practices, and excellent leadership skills. You will be expected to plan, organize, and self-direct projects.
Research and develop new techniques and technologies that improve the state of the art in media production.
Lead discussions on future production technologies and methodologies. Articulate the pros and cons of various production toolsets.
Test and evaluate next generation technologies and processes to assist technical leadership in making informed decisions.
Provide strategic guidance of digital media production tools, techniques and architecture for a variety of production and postproduction environments.
Communicate and collaborate with peers, vendors and internal departments on technology strategies.
Development of technical specifications for media acquisitions, deliverables, archives, interchange formats, viewing environments.
Participate in industry committees and standards bodies in an effort to further HBO agendas.
Lead the development of frameworks and processes to enable rendering, manipulation, and creation of media for current and next generation display technologies.
Partner with department personnel to make improvements and efficiencies in their media workflows.
Provide technical design input on hardware, software, storage, and network for both current and future production systems.
Interact with Operations and Engineering management teams to provide appropriate technical guidance on solutions.
Mentor and expand technical skills across the department.
B.S., preferably M.S. in Computer Science or related technical field
Minimum 15 years in professional environment, 3 years in a leadership function
10+ years developing, supporting, implementing production tools or application software
Strong foundation in programming fundamentals such as data structures and algorithms
Expert knowledge of industry standards such as SMPTE, NABA and ACES
A deep understanding of image processing and analysis, and color management
A strong background in, and experience with, 2D and 3D production software
Strong problem solving skills with high attention to detail and quality
Proven ability to work with product management, architecture, and senior leadership
Proven ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal, with technical and non-technical cross-functional teams
